Ali’thaveline (pronounced AH-lee-THAH-veh-LEEN) is called “Ali” or “Shadow” by most folk. When she wears her blond hair loose, it covers the pointed tips of her ears, and she can pass for human; however, she usually keeps her hair in braids. She has her mother’s ice-blue eyes. A lifetime spent in the outdoors has given her an athletic build, but her skin has always stayed fair. People often think she’s younger than she really is.

The versatility of her voice enables Ali to command attention or express empathy as needed. She’s always talking or singing, and must be convinced to shut up when it’s prudent to do so. But she’s always attentive to her surroundings, and listens carefully to what others have to say.

She no longer dresses in the hides and furs of a barbarian, preferring the sort of traveling outfit more commonly worn by rangers. She wears a dwarf-made suit of chain mail, and arms herself with a longsword and dagger. Her well-worn boots have seen miles of road and trails.

Shadow of the Vigilant Daughter’s Sword was born among the Tigerclaw barbarians of the Winterbole Forest, near Nenlast. Her mother, Ancestor’s Vigilant Sword, was the subject of much gossip, given the years she spent wandering and her fatherless child, but she commanded respect as a tireless defender of the tribe.

Shadow knew from an early age that she wasn’t like the other Tigerclaws, and she knew her mysterious father was part of it. The other children shunned her, but the tribe’s respect for her mother kept them from ostracizing her entirely. She learned to fight from her mother, but the lore of the tribe’s skald, Laughing Raven, was her true passion. He taught her everything he knew, and by Shadow’s teenage years, she was infusing those songs and tales with arcane power.

One winter, Ancestor’s Vigilant Sword came down with scarlet plague. Certain that she’d die, Sword told her daughter the truth: her father was Elirethlian, an elven wizard she’d met in her youth. Shadow was the result of a night they’d spent together before a hopeless battle, trying to free themselves from the certainty of death. But they survived, returning to their separate lives when the quest was over. Sword survived the plague, too; once sure her mother would recover, Shadow went south in search of her father.

Shadow made her way to Riverdown, where he was said to live. Instead she found his son, Yshriel, outside the town. Yshriel told her that Elirethlian had transcended mortality and left our world for the Feywild. Shadow persuaded her half-brother to educate her in elven ways; she learned the language from him, and now goes by the Elven rendition of her name – Ali’thaveline. Ali (as Yshriel calls her) now serves as a diplomat between Yshriel’s circle and Riverdown, and spends much of her time exploring the surrounding area.

Ali’thaveline is in the grip of wanderlust. She wants to explore every place and meet every person; she doesn’t bore easily, but the thought of what’s over that next hill gnaws at her until there’s nothing else. Her energy and enthusiasm seem inexhaustible.

Ali loves songs and stories of great heroes – she uses her favorite word, “glory,” with abandon – and her fondest wish is to become such a hero. She’s always searching for the quest that will start her down that road, and remains confident that she can handle whatever comes her way.

She holds no preconceived notions about the people she meets; everyone’s an individual, and given the chance to prove themselves. She makes friends easily, but rarely hangs around long enough to form deep relationships. Her compassionate nature compels her to help others, but she never imposes on anyone else to do the same.

Ali would rather seek a peaceful solution than fight, but her upbringing and arcane gifts come in handy when violence can’t be helped. She’s good at lying, and at smelling lies, but she prefers honesty, and her emotions often get the better of her.

Always trusting her heart before her head, Ali’thaveline has grown to love her brother in a fairly short time. She’s much more impulsive and impetuous than Yshriel, though, which occasionally strains their relationship.

Ali has bonded with Mia, thrilling the child with songs, dances, and tales from her tribe and her travels. She was never close to any of the other children in her tribe, and she’s much closer in age to Mia than Yshriel is.

She adores her mother, and is starting to think that Ancestor’s Vigilant Sword can’t die.

Her concern for the amnesiac Coda seems to run deeper than she realizes.
